Festival of Trees and Lights

It may seem a little too early to break out the Christmas decorations and eggnog, but it’s never too early to celebrate the spirit of giving. The last part of the year is always filled the rush of the holiday season, and the madness of shopping for the right gift. It’s easy to forget sometimes the reason we buy those gifts, and that not everyone is able to show their affection with a present. Many families barely have the means to make the bills, let alone fill the space beneath the tree with all the little treasures they’ve dreamed of getting for months. But this time of year should not be about who has the newest gadget, but instead about giving back and taking care of one another.

This weekend you’ll be able to not only give back to the community, but share some great family fun as well. The Children’s Hospital Foundation will be hosting the 23rd Annual Festival of Trees and Lights at Louisville Slugger Field, presented by Republic Bank & Trust Company. This festival has become a wonderful tradition over the last two decades, and it’s thanks to the people of Louisville donating their talents to this event that makes it so special. Each year, volunteers submit hundreds of decorated wreaths, trees, and other handmade items to sell at the festival, and all of the benefits go to the Addison Jo Blair Cancer Care Center at Kosair Children’s Hospital.

In addition to beautifully crafted art, you can splurge on delicious foods and sweets at the Sweet Shop, or purchase a holiday gift at the Gift Shop if you can’t find the right tree to take home with you. There’s a miniature train display to add to the Christmas spirit, and there are lots of activities for the kids. Face painting, decorating gingerbread houses, and pictures with Santa are just a few of the things this festival offers for the children to enjoy, and if you’re child is a scout, it gets even better. On November 10th and 11th, all Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts and Brownies get free admission and an event patch for attending. If you really want to treat the whole family, then you can attend Breakfast with Santa on Saturday morning, which includes pancakes and pictures with Mr. Claus as well as admission to the festival.

Admission to the festival is $3 for children 12 and younger, and $5 for adults. Children’s activities carry a small extra fee. There are several different events taking place this weekend, so for a complete list of all with times and admission fees, please visit http://www.kosairchildrens.com/calendar-of-events. The Festival of Trees and Lights raised over $400,000 last year for Kosair Children’s Hospital, so let’s get into the holiday spirit and raise even more this year. This is the best way to give back to those in need while spending time with the family, and you might just find the perfect Christmas tree to take home with you!
