Louisville Irish Fest 2012

Continuing with our promotion of the many festivals taking place in Louisville during the month of September, it is also important that we mention one of the biggest events annually taking place in the Louisville community: the Louisville Irish Fest. This year’s Louisville Irish Fest 2012 is sure to be another fun filled weekend appropriate for the entire family no matter how old or young.

As with most events in the Louisville area, there is an organization looking to promote an underlying cultural message which is the main reason for such festivals that celebrate and educate about specific groups in our diverse community. The Kentucky Irish Arts Foundation (IAF), a non-profit organization, which was founded in 1996, is the primary organizer of the Irish Fest event and has a goal of promoting the Irish culture and making Louisville a mainstay for Irish heritage through promoting events that showcase different forms of Irish culture such as: arts and crafts, food, music, dance and theatre. Continuing with the diverse nature of Louisville’s community, the Irish Fest provides a chance for members of other cultures to also join in on the fun and learn more about one of the larger ethnic groups living in the Louisville area. Some of the IAF’s future goals are to: develop a scholarship program, create a facility that promotes Irish culture in Louisville, and continuing to expand their overall program and create and promote educational resources.

This year’s Irish Fest is to feature many great exhibits and fun activities for the whole family. The events are to educate others on certain elements of the Irish culture such as: arts, music, food and entertainment. Some of the events include: fiddle, piano, accordion, and banjo workshops, various open panel workshops discussing specific areas of Irish culture, a kids area, a Sunday mass and much more. Also, one cannot forget about the various local restaurants specializing in Irish cuisine that will be providing food for the event. Some of the various vendors are: Molly Malone’s, Shenanigans, Ri Ra, Flanagans, and O’Sheas. With these food vendors, as well as many retail vendors, there is sure to be tons of fun for the entire family. The Irish Fest is a great opportunity for those who haven’t been introduced to Irish culture, as well as for those who are of the Irish heritage. The educational events along with Bellarmine University’s unique campus atmosphere, is sure to provide fun for the entire family, as well as provide newcomers to the Irish tradition an avenue to expand their knowledge of the culture.
