Noon Year’s Celebration
We’ve all been here before. Waiting up til midnight, watching the parties on TV. Kissing loved ones and toasting another year as we leave it behind. Some of us had our first sip of wine on New Year’s eve, or watched the ball drop in Times Square for the first time with our parents, staying up late without getting in trouble and feeling all grown up. Very little has changed about how we ring in the new year, and our last day of the old year never seems quite as exciting in comparison.
Well, thanks to the Kentucky Science Center, New Year’s just got a little more interesting. Get ready to celebrate the coming year in a way you never have before, as the Kentucky Science Center presents a string of fun activities for you to enjoy. Not only will you learn about how other countries around the world observe New Year’s, but also some of the tricks behind our favorites traditions here in the United States, like the mechanics that bring us the amazing firework displays we marvel at each year.
If those fireworks happen to be the part of the festivities you love the best, then head over to the Noisemaker Lab to see what goes into these stunning explosions of color and light. You’ll also get to see the Science Center’s own version of a fireworks show when they explode lots of hydrogen balloons in a dazzling indoor demonstration! You can even design your own balloon for the party, which will be dropped from the third floor atrium to mark the beginning of the new year. In addition to fireworks, you’ll be able to discover what makes the machinery of the world tick in the “Gearing Up” exhibition, where you and your family can disassemble and rebuild everything from a clock to a bicycle.
The Louisville Lion Dance Team will be putting on a performance on New Year’s Eve between 1:00pm and 3:00pm, welcoming 2013 with a little bit of rhythm and style. Don’t miss their incredible moves, or your chance to celebrate New Year’s the way they do in other countries, where baking trinkets into homemade bread is practiced for good luck. So in turn, I wish you luck in finding all the charms in the bread dough at the Kentucky Science Center, which is dedicated to making New Year’s an experience unlike any you’ve seen, as well as luck in all you do next year!
