I think most of us can agree that gift shopping is one of the most stressful things about this time of the year. It’s all about getting the “perfect present” and scoring on the best door-buster deals you can find. The main focus is always the newest smart phone or tablet, or the hottest toy for kids. That unique tradition of handmade gifts has nearly died out, not just in Louisville, but in every corner of every nation that celebrates Christmas. There’s something truly touching about receiving a gift no one else in the world has, and if you’re looking to buy such a gift, I can help point you in the right direction.

On Saturday, December 1st, the Thomas Jefferson Unitarian Church is hosting WinterFair, an arts and crafts exhibition with lots of affordable, one-of-a-kind items if you want to get the right gift for a one-of-a-kind person. With over 80 artisans putting their talents on display, you’re sure to find something that will make the gift-giving season feel a little less commercial, and a lot more enchanting. There will be returning artists for those of you who may have already been and might want to revisit a particular booth, but there will be many new artists as well, so there’s no limit to the amazing things you could find there.

This art fair has a huge range of skills behind it, giving you a great selection to choose from. If you’re buying for the fashion savvy friend (or for yourself) then check out the clothing and jewelry booths that offer finely crafted items to wear around town. There are a number of ceramic and sculpture booths for those who really appreciate the art of handcrafted figurines, and booths filled with breathtaking paintings that can make any wall in any house come to life. There are also quite a few artisans with an amazing eye for the precision of glass and woodwork, so make sure to check out some of their creations, too, as well as the beautiful images that have been captured by the artisans of the photography booths.

There will be food and drink for the weary shopper, with a little something for every taste bud, from chili to sweets to a few select vegetarians options. There will be an art raffle to benefit a local non-profit art program, so you’ll have a great opportunity to support the growing talent of our community. And to top it all off, there’s on-site parking at this event. WinterFair is your chance to put some of the mystery back into the gift giving part of the holidays, so let’s start making the handmade present a tradition again. Not only will you be supporting local talent, you’ll rediscover the humbling warmth of a present that is unique and precious.
