ButchertownNeighboring the northeast side of downtown Louisville, the Butchertown neighborhood is nestled in between the intersection of Main Street and Story Avenue and is bounded by the Ohio River, Beargrass Creek, and Mellwood Avenue. Butchertown is a very historic neighborhood, with its roots dating as far back as the late 18th century. From the late 1700′s and throughout the 1800′s, Butchertown was a thriving residential community, comprised of mostly German immigrants. In 1836, the first stockyard, the Bourbon Stockyards, moved into the neighborhood. By the late 1800′s, Butchertown had gone from a dynamic residential neighborhood, to an industrial center.

Since the 1960′s, Butchertown has seen a revival of sorts – prompting many young professionals and families to move into the area. Butchertown offers a great mix of old and new, as it is home to some of the oldest surviving structures in Louisville. These historic buildings such as the Thomas Edison House and the Butchertown Market, coupled with new attractions like the Louisville Extreme Park, make Butchertown a very unique neighborhood.
